Winter Walk at Sloan Gorge[TEST NOT A REAL EVENT]

Japanese Barberry is an invasive thorny shrub, threatening ecosystems throughout the Hudson Valley. It hosts higher than average amounts of deer ticks and suppresses biodiversity. Despite its challenging nature, Japanese barberry is also a beautiful plant! Join local horticulturist Maria Vigna and the Woodstock Land Conservancy team for a simple stroll with hot cocoa provided by Kingston Bread and Bar. We'll spy the unique environmental opportunities present in late winter, discuss the challenges of conservation, and celebrate recent successes rewilding Sloan Gorge.

Who's invited: This event is FREE and open to all ages
Difficulty level: Easy - Though the trail at Sloan Gorge is moderately difficult, we'll mostly stay close to the entrance, in favor of making this event broadly accessible.

What to bring: We recommend wearing sturdy shoes and bringing binoculars if you have them

About Maria Vigna: A lifelong student of horticulture, ecological anthropology, and subsistence economics, Maria has worked and studied in gardens, organic farms and sustainability projects around the world. She was born and raised in the Hudson Valley of New York and continues to pursue environmental stewardship as a co-owner of Earth Designs Cooperative, a worker-owned landscaping cooperative based in Rosendale, New York. Maria holds a degree in Anthropology from SUNY New Paltz, is an avid rock climber & sailor, and currently lives in Accord with her partner, two dogs, two cats, and 50,000 honeybees.
